Suicide Prevention
Veteran Suicide Prevention & Awareness
Hope. Help. Healing for Those Who Served.
The Crisis We Can’t Ignore
Veteran suicide remains one of the most urgent public health crises in America:
- Approximately 17 veterans die by suicide every day in the United States (mentalhealth.va.gov).
- Veterans are 50% more likely to die by suicide than their civilian peers.
- Firearms are involved in 71% of veteran suicides, making access to crisis care and early intervention critical.
- Among post-9/11 veterans, suicide rates have more than doubled over the past decade.
- Veterans with PTSD, TBI, MST, or substance use disorders are at the highest risk.
- Rural veterans—those living in areas with fewer support systems—are particularly vulnerable to isolation, untreated mental health issues, and lack of access to care.
At Fire Missions Veteran Services, we are committed to more than awareness—we are committed to action, outreach, and intervention.
Connecting with Veterans Where They Are At Fire Missions Veteran Services, we believe that healing and transformation begin with connection. Our Community Outreach program is designed to bring vital resources, hope, and human connection directly to veterans—especially those living in rural areas of Kentucky, where services are often limited or non-existent. Our outreach efforts are rooted in compassion, action, and a deep commitment to “Leave No Veteran Behind.”
How FMVS Fights to Prevent Veteran Suicide
Suicide prevention is not just a service we offer—it’s a mission embedded in every program we run. FMVS reaches veterans in crisis before it’s too late by offering immediate support and long-term recovery solutions.
Addiction & Crisis Recovery
Our 24-week Operation Redemption program includes:
- Trauma-informed counseling
- One-on-one mentorship and journaling
- Equine therapy and volunteer service
- A safe and structured recovery environment
Many participants are at risk of suicide when they enter our program—our mission is to meet them with faith, safety, and purpose.
Transitional, Emergency, and Permanent Housing
Through our partnership with Veterans Rural Outreach (VRO), we provide:
- Stable, private housing to remove veterans from crisis settings
- Case management that identifies suicide risk early
- Safety plans and referrals to mental health providers and VA crisis services
Veteran Outreach & Intervention
We attend community events across Kentucky—fairs, parades, resource expos, and more—to identify veterans in need of support. Our outreach teams are trained to:
- Recognize signs of suicidal ideation
- Engage veterans and families with compassion
- Provide on-the-spot resources for immediate help
- Refer to professional and VA-based mental health services
Navigating the VA Mental Health System
Many veterans don’t seek help because they feel lost in the system. At FMVS, we help veterans:
- Enroll in VA mental health services
- Get connected to a suicide prevention coordinator
- Schedule counseling and telehealth sessions
- Complete Compensation & Pension (C&P) exams for PTSD and related conditions
- Understand and use the Veterans Crisis Line:
📞Dial 988 then Press 1 (24/7, confidential)
Raising Awareness. Saving Lives.
Beyond direct care, FMVS raises awareness through:
- Public events that promote mental health education
- Community speaking engagements
- Partnerships with KDVA, USA Cares, VOA, KHC, and local VFWs
- Programs addressing root causes like PTSD, MST, TBI, and addiction
- Holiday events where veterans are seen, celebrated, and supported year-round
Faith-Based Healing with a Proven Impact
By combining faith, housing, outreach, and professional connections, FMVS has helped:
- Over 300 veterans annually through outreach and resource navigation
- 40+ veterans directly through our transitional housing program at the VRO
- Countless families reconnect with veterans on the verge of giving up
Every meal, every bed, every conversation at FMVS is a life-saving opportunity.
